The music staff are Mrs Christine Carroll and Mrs Belinda Hungerford. Music is taught to all Year 7 students and offered as an elective in Years 8,9,10, 11 and 12. In Year 7 the students develop skills in playing guitar and keyboard and in the elective class, form small ensembles and expand their performance skills by playing electric guitars, bass, drums and vocals.

    Ensembles

    At Hunter River High School we offer a range of ensembles for the students. These include; Ukulele Club, VocaLeague, Brass and Woodwind Ensemble, and Vocal Group. We welcome any student who would like to be involved in any extra activity. Sarah McLennan is the tutor for VocaLeague and brings a new level of expertise to singing. She has worked with our students since 2015 and the program is very successful. We hope to offer other ensemble work during the term.

     

    Facilities

    There are two music rooms equipped with a vast range of musical instruments including; keyboards, acoustic guitars, semi-acoustic guitars, electric guitars, bass guitars, drum kit, ukuleles, double bass, piano, a variety of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. Each classroom also has a portable PA systems, enabling the vocalists to develop their microphone technique. A rehearsal room is also available for the students to use.

    Non-Elective Music

    This course is taught as part of the Board of Studies requirements to Year 7 and 8 students.  The course is taught with a topic focus.  Year 7 studies Australian Music and Music of a Culture and Year 8 studies Film and Rock Music.  We operate on a semester basis with a focus on the three outcomes: performing, composing and listening.

    In this course the students aquire the following skills:

    • Performance - keyboard, guitar and drums.  Students perform melodies and accompaniments from a range of repertoire.
    • Listening - the students are introduced to the aural concepts and how they relate to listening examples.
    • Composing - students learn to notate music through graphic and traditional notation and perform their compositions.
