The Careers Department at Hunter River High School supports students in planning their futures with practical guidance, hands-on opportunities, and personalised advice.
We offer career-enhancing courses such as White Card, First Aid training, RSA and RCG. Year 10 students participate in Education & Career classes focused on goal setting, HSC preparation, TAFE and apprenticeship pathways, resume writing, and interview skills.
Senior students receive ongoing support with applications, work experience, and transition planning. We also provide access to guest speakers, excursions, industry programs, and School-Based Traineeships to help students explore real-world career options.

P-TECH at Hunter River High School
Hunter River High School is proud to be part of the innovative P-TECH (Pathways in Technology) program — a national initiative connecting education, industry and community to prepare students for future careers in emerging technology fields.
Through partnerships with leading local industries, P-TECH students gain real-world experience in Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering, Aviation, Aero Skills and Electrotechnology. The program combines academic learning with practical skills, mentoring and workplace opportunities, helping students build the technical and employability skills valued by employers.
Our P-TECH program has strong links with industry partners including Ampcontrol Group, TAFE NSW, Tomago Aluminium, Varley Group, Komatsu, Diesel Pro, Cougar Mining Group, the University of Newcastle and RDA Hunter. These partnerships provide students with industry tours, work placements, mentoring, and apprenticeship opportunities.
As a flagship initiative, P-TECH Pathways maximises opportunities for our students to explore future career prospects and supports them in achieving a clear post-school destination through further education, training and employment.
Vocational Education & Training (VET)
Vocational Education and Training (VET) provides workplace skills, technical knowledge, and qualifications for rewarding jobs and careers. VET is the practical education option with courses designed by industry experts that combine work-ready skills with the latest knowledge.
- Students demonstrate knowledge and understanding within these competencies:

- Working with others in teams
- Using mathematical ideas and techniques
- Solving problems
- Using technology.

- Certificate II in Hospitality (Food and Beverage)
- Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations)
- Certificate III in Retail (Retail Services)
- Certificate I in Engineering (Manufacturing & Engineering)
- Certificate II in Agriculture (Primary Industries)
- Certificate III in Aviation
- Certificate II in Aeroskills
- Certificate II in Construction Pathways (Construction)
- Certificate II in Sport Coaching (Sport Coaching)
- Certificate III in Music Industry
Each course is dual accredited with accreditation by both the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and the Australian Skills Quality Council (ASQC). These arrangements mean that training is nationally recognised.
The courses are described in competency-based terms, meeting industry training requirements. They prepare students for employment and are also designed to lead (through credit transfer) into a range of post-school education and training options. Each course has a mandatory workplace learning component. Students are required to complete a minimum of 70 hours of work placement completed in two one-week blocks. Other courses that offer workplace opportunities for students include Transition Education for Students with Disabilities, Students at Risk and Career Education.
Students who are interested in researching or preparing themselves for entry into other vocations, can do so through
2 Unit Work Studies.
